Ted Talks on IBM Watson & Bayes’ rule in evolution
Some of our most read articles have been on IBM Watson, including suggestions & possible alternatives. We’ve pushed IBM several times to come up with better demos for Watson in a business context. This author went to a demonstration by IBM of Watson in August 2014, an witnessed an overglorified AltaVista demonstrated by an engineer. (AltaVista was the dominant Internet search engine prior to Google. Both Google and AltaVista can handle natural language question-like syntax in search queries, although users tend not to use since it just adds boilerplate text. Similar to AltaVista two decades ago, this Watson demonstration would some respond to questions by coming up with partially-related excerpts from various web pages from a small medical database on the web. It had difficultly understanding many simple questions, and the clips selected weren’t always the most appropriate responses. It didn’t look like this thing was a Jeopardy! champion. As the engineer was told, this is bleeding-edge technology; if you want to sell it to businesses, you need to make the case.… Read the restAugusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace
This is Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, today known simply as Ada Lovelace (Wikipedia). This is an 1838 portrait of her by Margaret Sarah Carpenter. Ada is a famous steampunk for a couple of reasons: the sole legitimate child of the poet Lord Byron. Lovelace was also an avid mathematician. For her work on the difference engine, an early mechanical computer in the 19th century, she is also commonly credited as the first computer programmer. The computer programming language Ada is named after her. Post and some comments below may be synced from our original Instagram version. We realized our original glitch art Pioneer Plaque historic infographic would work much better as a commuter mug. So we decided to redo our original emergency anti-extraterrestrial abduction Earth locator mug as a commuter mug. (Both mugs are still our family-friendly cropped design.) For starters, the original plaque was gold metal and designed to last a billion years in space as M.E.T.I./S.E.T.I. This version probably won’t last as long, but you can still try communicating with aliens by hurtling it at them. Hopefully they won’t mistake it for dangerous space junk. This commuter mug will help keep your coffee warm on the long interstellar trip. (And trip is definitely the right word here.) Were you really expecting them to have your favorite brand of Arabica coffee on a UFO? Don’t think so. If they even know what coffee is, it’s probably that ersatz Robusta stuff coming out of a food synthesizer.… Read the restOpen societies, world literacy and censorship, Take 2
A couple things here. A while back we did several posts about the social progress index (with the original, unglitched Dutch masterpiece version of this 1600s schoolhouse painting to symbolize world literacy). We talked about how big data (or at least econometric) models predict how closed societies negatively impact our world, and some speculation about real world events. Since we wrote our original article, one of the Social Progress Index folks did a Ted talk. On an unrelated noted, we also we wanted to do an encore repost of our Dutch schoolhouse painting. This was partially to remind our Instagram followers about the demonstrated importance of open societies: a combination (and balance) of factors such as high literacy (education), low corruption, security, and low inequality. Ironically, Instagram decided to censor our original post comment (with this image but with a caption about glitch art and the Social Progress Index.) The image was allowed but the comment automatically deleted by Instagram’s censorship software.… Read the restRecent Comments
