Virtual Fashion Shoot: Acculation Fashion Line (VR data #glamour)
This time, our data-driven decisions have led us to glamour, our own clothing line, and this VR virtual fashion shoot. Who says big data analytics have to be boring? First, some background on what got us here. Remember that, umm, ‘marketeer’ who suggested (in a comment on our IG feed) that we drop data science (one of the hottest fields at the moment) and instead sell his clothing? The comment was likely automated, but we had fun with it anyway. We told him we were too busy working on our perfume line. (“Data science: the new fragrance for men.”) But then we realized — technology exists to turn our IG feed (and the photo posts on this blog) into a fashion collection. So we wanted to do a fashion shoot. But models can be hard to work with. (They got agents, and, uggg, what a hassle. We live in LA, so we know.)… Read the restFunny post about using fashion design as a device GUI
We posted this back on our Facebook page back in January in response to our then-very popular climate dress article. Although our posting is intended to be funny, there is a serious point: perhaps we have a lot to learn from fashion design on how to make better GUIs for our electronic devices and gadgets. We did actually contact the designer, Diffus DK, as mentioned in the Facebook post, quoted below. We had a nice discussion about some of the other products they are working on, including some home furnishing designs and interfaces. (We probably should have posted here instead of on Facebook. As due to the “new” algorithms Facebook has been gradually rolling over the last few months, this blog gets much more readership than posting to Facebook page will. This has infuriated some marketers, who spent a great deal of money buying supposedly highly-targeted, highly-engaged Facebook likes from Facebook at cost typically of maybe $1-$2 or more.… Read the restTravel Channel features tech; crowd-funding of masks (Readers comments)
Since our last post we received some comments from readers worth noting here: Thomas Talhelm of Smart Air Filters, Inc. (see our article) wrote a comment on our Facebook page: A Beijing-based doctor is crowd-funding an initiative to have open tests of air pollution masks, including fit tests while people are moving and masks for kids. Worthy of a few bucks! Cool! Sounds like a worthy project! And they look better and less comical than some of the air quality masks we’ve previously reviewed! Air quality masks are very much needed in China. And Everett Greenstreet III, a realtor and editor of the Live Green in DC blog writes: I thought you would like to know that the host of the show Hotel Impossible used a Dylos Dust monitor [link added] on the latest episode of the show which airs on Travel Channel [link]. This really is powerful that a Hotel operator would monitor the air quality, etc.… Read the restDesigner Dress That Changes Color in Response to Pollution?
In the publicity stunt section, as mentioned on CNN and others, Danish fashion house Diffus has created a designer dress (pictured; photo courtesy Diffus) that changes color in response to levels of pollution. (It actually changes color in response to CO2 levels. As this is fairly constant outdoors, it might not have been the most inspired pollutant to monitor — NO2, NO, CO and dust would all have been more interesting.) Interested readers with a fashion bent can build their own. You need an Arudino open-source hardware board (some sample projects for incorporating Arudino projects can be found here. Then, all you need is an Air Quality Egg Arudino shield kit, which can be purchased from WickedDevices. This can monitor CO, NO2, and NO, with add-ons available for dust, VOC, and Ozone pollutants. (Arudino shields for CO2 are avaiable from other suppliers.) Once you’ve completed your electronics prototype, it’s time to become a fashion designer: there are small “Arudino-like” boards that are designed to be woven into fabrics, like the Adafruit Gemma.… Read the restRecent Comments
