Data science and limits on human lifespan (or … vampire heart rates)
Human longevity science has been in the news recently. According to a paper in Nature by Dong et al. (New York Times article), the natural limit on human lifespan is about 115 years. Life expectancy has essentially stopped improving. This is in contrast to the views and hopes of some, such as the transhumanists and folks at Singularity University (whom we previously discussed in our water futures article and elsewhere), who are giddy that advances in technology (such as the super-intelligence) will soon lead to vasty elongated lifespans. Are there some simple data science or predictive analytics things we can do to illustrate the underlying the limits on human lifespan? Can we use predictive analytics to figure out what technologies or behaviors might potentially hold the key to greatly extended human longevity? (And is greatly prolonged life even a socially desirable or feasible goal given the resource limits like limits on pension funds?)… Read the restEncore glitch art of the AQE IoT device
This is an encore glitch art version of our earlier layout collage photo (and blog post) on the AQE IoT air quality sensing device (no affiliation). To do the encore post, we, of course, did a glitched version of the photo we previously posted here and on our IG feed. (Think we hinted we would do that in our earlier post.) Post and some comments below may be synced from our original Instagram version. Instagram likes: (more…)… Read the restAir Quality Egg (AQE) open-source IoT photo
This is a first-generation Air Quality Egg (AQE) node (Wikipedia article) from WickedDevices in Ithaca, New York (no affiliation, although our mobile app does support it). Yes, it looks like holiday lights when operating. It changes color form purple, green, and other colors when it receives data. The AQE is an open-source hardware Internet of Things device. That means you can download the schematic and modify it yourself. Nowadays, most hardware prototyping (especially open-source) is done with the Arudino hardware prototyping system. There’s a special “Air Quality Egg” shield circuit board that holds the air quality sensors, but you can think of the Arudino as software. In the old days, electronics engineers would have to rewire stuff. But, in an Arudino, you “rewire” things by changing the software code in its microcontroller. The Arudino takes the output from the AQE shield bus and transmits it (via ethernet cable in this case).… Read the restSelf-replicating 3D printer: von Neumann machines on Mars?
Is this self-replicating 3D printer a von Neumann machine that will someday go to Mars? Yesterday, we experimented with our idea of Instagram to 3D printed jewelry for the more popular monochrome photos in our feed. The technology worked at some level (we have jewelry on Shapeways now, based on a previous IG photo post). But it took too long and too many artistic decisions to get it there. It wasn’t quite blinking lights automatic the way our earlier virtual fashion shoot could be. So this is a good time to step back and explain what 3D printing is or can become, for those we are less familiar with it. This is Mandel, a version of RepRap. RepRap is an open source hardware project to build a fully self-replicating 3D printer. That’s right, a 3D printer that can print a copy of itself. We’ve discussed the concept of self-replicating machines previously in posts on cellular automata.… Read the restRecent Posts
