Human longevity science has been in the news recently. According to a paper in Nature by Dong et al. (New York Times article), the natural limit on human lifespan is about 115 years. Life expectancy has essentially stopped improving. This is in contrast to the views and hopes of some, such as the transhumanists and folks at Singularity University (whom we previously discussed in our water futures article and elsewhere), who are giddy that advances in technology (such as the super-intelligence) will soon lead to vasty elongated lifespans. Are there some simple data science or predictive analytics things we can do to illustrate the underlying the limits on human lifespan? Can we use predictive analytics to figure out what technologies or behaviors might potentially hold the key to greatly extended human longevity? (And is greatly prolonged life even a socially desirable or feasible goal given the resource limits like limits on pension funds?)… Read the restOur Twitter account is a top 1% global social media influencer
According to social media rating firm Kred, our associated Twitter account is a top 1% of social media influencer globally. (Our Kred score, 751 at the original time of this writing, has since gone higher.) Thought we’d share the Kred badge as our Picture of the Day on our Instagram account. Multiple, third-party social media ratings firms, have consistently put us in the top 1 to 5% of social media influencers globally. We also a high Klout rating, and earlier social media rating firm Magnific ranked us among the most influential locally in Los Angeles. These social media rankings are, of course, an example of analytics (and, potentially, big data). Different rating firms (and techniques) have advantages and disadvantages. Kred’s claim to fame is that they are using a completely open ranking methodology. This is unlike most of their competitors, which feel a need to keep their algorithms secret to prevent gaming, among other issues.… Read the restAnimal intelligence & consciousness: the mirror test
Analytics and mirrors: While the ability to recognize ones reflection in a mirror appears to be an excellent test of animal intelligence (and perhaps a hint about machine intelligence), with very few animals passing the test, humans have appreciated mirrors for millennia. Sacred objects in some cultures (e.g., ancient Japan), mirrors have been cherished for at least 6000 years, since at least the beginning of the Bronze Age. Shown here is an ancient Etruscan Bronze mirror #handle from the 4th–3rd century BC on display in the Lourve museum collection near Paris in France. The piece is titled, appropriately enough, “The Judgement of Paris.” It’s easy enough to see where humans got the idea for mirrors, as we’ll show in our next photo. This is also a great segue into our Halloween posts. (This was originally posted on our IG feed as part of a series of Halloween posts.) Other than smoke and mirrors, or a room full of mirrors, what do mirrors have to do with Halloween?… Read the restRecent Posts
