Cheap air filters for the broke?
Cheap air filters when you can’t afford to make a fashion statement? Air pollution is serious enough to create elevated cancer, trigger allergies and asthma is of concern in nearly every major city in the world. However, according to NASA, the worst PM2.5 pollution is in Chinese and Indian cities, places where it may be difficult for the average citizen to afford a traditional, consumer-grade air purifier. As most people don’t want to wear a mask all day long and look like a medieval plague doctor, the hunt is on for other cheap technologies, such as dirt cheap air filters and purifiers. [UPDATE: Thomas Talhelm of Smart Air Filters emailed us some comments/corrections on the article. We’ve included these in the comments below.] One Chinese/American startup, based in Beijing and the US [Update: they are mainly in Beijing], may have a solution. Smart Air Filters has come up with inexpensive kits consisting of little more than a fan, some duct tape [Update: it’s a velcro strap], and a HEPA filter.… Read the restWhy big city fitness gyms need to install clean air tech.
Third article in half a month on “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” bad LA air days Yet another bad air day in Los Angeles last night (see app screenshot) [originally published Jan 23, 2014]. We’ve now done three articles on ‘Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups’ bad air days in Los Angeles due to the Colby Fire and random automobile pollution just in the month of January alone. Incidentally, those “sensitive groups” involve working out at the fitness gym, which we’ll talk a bit more about in a bit. Despite a serious air purifier, our indoor PM2.5 dust particle counts on our Laser Particle Counter spiked around 10:30 PM Pacific Time yesterday, so we knew something was up. Running the numbers through our free app, they were starting to get bad. The EPA was still showing PM2.5 levels in the area as “moderate”, but EPA data is weighted average of 4-hour and 24-hour data (it sort of has to be), so it is delayed.… Read the restInternet Of Things (IoT) Cisco CES talk
[Update: One of our most shared posts, although sharing counts were lost during the site migration.] Internet of Things and Home Automation big at CES this year Some of us were at CES looking at exhibits. Internet of Things (IOT) was hot this year. The home automation space was hot; home automation products are being increasing advanced and more app-integrated. (Currently available home automation offerings include Mi Casa, Smarthings, and revolv.) Of course, just after CES closed Google announced it was acquiring IOT play Nest, makers of an Internet-connected thermostat and smoke alarm. But there were plenty of other large players dangling in this space (none of them yet focusing much on air quality, although Cisco had a presentation which touched on allergies, home automation, and the Internet of Things). Cisco had a large exhibit there promoting the Internet of Everything (IOE), Cisco’s marketing term for IOT. Cisco explained that under Moore’s law, sensors will become cheap and ubiquitous.… Read the restRecent Posts
