Internet map: network data visualization example
Moving on from dashboards & scoreboards, let’s look at some cool data visualizations. This is a 2005 visualization of the Internet IP addresses — or an Internet map. It’s an example of data visualization for a network.Β Each line joins two IP addresses, with the length representing the delay between them. Less than 30% of reachable addresses were used to construct the Internet map, so this Internet map is only a partial map of the Internet at that time. This is Nasa’s Β Very Large Array (VLA). This “looks” like SETI, but isn’t actually, as we’ll explain. Frustrated by the recent lack of intelligent life here on Earth (as evidenced by recent news stories — google late January 2015 if you’re reading this post in the future), we’re again looking towards the stars. This is Nasa’s Very Large Array, a set of radio telescopes that are the “go to” image everyone associates with SETI (The Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence). Ironically, this array is not used for SETI at all. (The array just looks cool and the media uses it as “SETI” images. More evidence of lack of intelligent life on Earth, we guess. π Obviously the Drake equation will need to be revised given Earth’s recent loss of status on the intelligent life front this month. π This telescope array is from the 1970s in Socorro, NM, and may be outdated.… Read the restIndia, astrolabes, government & democracy
India, astrolabes, government and democracy (and data)? These things pretty much have nothing to do with each other, right? Right. Astrolabes have nothing to do with democracy (or the conquistadors). This is a electronic voting machine used in India. You’re probably thinking: we just put this photo in here because we thought it would look cool. But is there a relationship. What is it? And how does it relate to Catalan hero Ramon Llull? Let’s see … India and astrolabes. Is that the relationship? Some possibilities (and controversy) there; we’ll leave for another day. Electronic voting machines another big source of controversy; we could post endlessly here. π And democracy: we’ve talked about that before in our social progress posts (the dutch schoolhouse photo post on IG and others). India is the world’s largest democracy (although we hope that’s just a prototype; if that thing’s used in real elections in India we’re nervous.… Read the restMandelbrot set: cellular automatons & fractal islands
Mandelbrot set: fractal math. After spending some time in space, we wanted to come back down to Earth. Continuing on our previous photos, should we talk about Conquistador economics or the invention of writing and 3,000 year-old Chinese sunspot observations? First let’s talk about von Neumann machines and cellular automatons. This is the famous Mandelbrot set, an image generated from pure mathematics. There are an infinite number of beautiful images inside the Mandelbrot set. The Mandelbrot set isn’t normally constructed as a cellular automaton (although it certainly can be as cellular automatons are Turing-complete for the computer scientists out there.) However, many other famous fractals are easily expressed as cellular automatons. The two fields are closely related, as many fractals (including Mandelbrot) are related to bifurcation problems on recursive functions (famously related to automaton simulations). We’ll just note for now that Cellular Automatons are another name for von Neumann machines, which you may remember from Arthur C.… Read the restRecent Posts
