Exciting times for home automation: using light to alter moods
A number of companies have also done scientific studies showing that the color of light from multi-colored LED smartbulbs can impact things such as mood and reduce the impact of jet lag. The sun’s light naturally changes color throughout the course of the day, and human biology appears to take cues from that. In addition to saving a lot of energy compared with traditional or fluorescent bulbs, you can do a lot of other color things with multicolored smartbulbs. Some folks have them automatically flash purple to remind children of their bedtime. Smarthome bulbs should not, however, be seen as panacea. Many of these devices are first generation. Most current LEDs don’t emit in all the wavelengths that human eyes are known to detect (infrared wavelengths, used for circadian rhythms, is missing from most of these systems). Nor are these devices marketed (or intended) to treat medical conditions. But if you’re a technophile, an environmentalist interested in greener bulbs, or just like the idea of seeing what light can do, you may want to look into new gadgets.… Read the restProject management and software engineering analytics
Have you ever wondered, “how many software engineers does it take to change a lightbulb?” This post will give you the predictive analytics tools to finally answer that age-old question. Today we look at using software engineering analytics to help project managers and software engineering managers do resource planning. This is part of our popular Ask Acculation series; scroll down to find out how to get your analytics or start-up questions answered here. We originally answered this question on a Q&A site. Where can I learn best practices for Scrum? The answer depends on the specific situation. Many advocates of Agile insist that it can only be done properly if engineers and your internal product experts are the same location, or at least in the same time zone. The original question asked about “Scrum” but didn’t specify whether Agile was intended or not. Proper use of the term “Scrum” always requires Agile, but in practice project managers will use the term “Scrum” with what are, in fact, very non-Agile methodologies.… Read the restUsing analytics to validate startup ideas for products?
Today we look at using predictive analytics to validate startup ideas. This is part of our continuing Ask Acculation series; scroll down to find out how to get your analytics or start-up questions answered here. A version of this post was originally published elsewhere. “How do I validate my B2B idea? I have considered joining an accelerator, building a website prototype, or asking entrepreneur friends, but are there other ways? This is essentially one of the main goals of predictive analytics (what we do) when applied to business data: be able to evaluate your idea using fast, inexpensive tests, than transform that data to how the market might behave under “real” conditions. First off, the premise of the question is intriguing. We’ve seen social media memes that have gone viral “there is no B2B or B2C. There are only people” superimposed over some sort of feel-good graphic. And the memes have their staunch defends.… Read the restCommon start-up hiring misconceptions
Startup hiring on a shoestring budget? Recently, we’ve gotten an awful lot of unsolicited requests for start-up advice, such as today’s question about startup hiring on a shoestring budget. (We’ve also received some solicited questions, as well. 🙂 ) We sometimes see the same mistakes being made over and over again by local entrepreneurs. We thought we’d cover some of these in our blog if it will help other start-ups out. If you have or are considering doing a start-up, scroll to the bottom of this article to see how you can get your questions answered in a future version of this column. Today, we’ll clear up some common misconceptions about the cost of engineers. This is an actual question we recently received via email from a local entrepreneur, one of many in our mail. We’ve removed the company name and altered some details for publication purposes. Start-up newbie: “I have an idea for a really awesome video-related mobile app!… Read the restRecent Posts
