Signal processing, motion, and artificial intelligence: Ted Talk
Intelligence, signal processing, and motion Intelligence, as it evolved in the natural world, is closely connected to motion. As at least one neuroscientist has noted that no motion means no need for a brain. We generalize a neuroscience Ted Talk linking brains to muscles to argue that intelligence is best considered a form of signal processing in a very noisy environment. This is very different from the traditional symbolic paradigm of artificial intelligence, which is not at all suited for signal processing. We had a tremendous reader response (mostly on various different social media sites) in response to our superintelligence article. We have a lot of ground to cover to respond to all the comments. We have to explain why any of a number of paradigms place limits on any computing system (including a superintelligent one). We need to talk about why intelligence likely scales with non-linear diminishing returns with effort (and why that may make superintelligence difficult).… Read the restGlitched Historical Centennial Bulb
A glitched pop-art version of the historic light bulb we used in one of our first IG posts. That version was the featured image for our blog article on validation of start-up ideas. This is a version of the Centennial bulb of Livermore, CA. It is the longest burning light bulb of all time. Post and some comments below may be synced from our original Instagram version. Instagram likes: (more…)… Read the restTed Talks on IBM Watson & Bayes’ rule in evolution
Some of our most read articles have been on IBM Watson, including suggestions & possible alternatives. We’ve pushed IBM several times to come up with better demos for Watson in a business context. This author went to a demonstration by IBM of Watson in August 2014, an witnessed an overglorified AltaVista demonstrated by an engineer. (AltaVista was the dominant Internet search engine prior to Google. Both Google and AltaVista can handle natural language question-like syntax in search queries, although users tend not to use since it just adds boilerplate text. Similar to AltaVista two decades ago, this Watson demonstration would some respond to questions by coming up with partially-related excerpts from various web pages from a small medical database on the web. It had difficultly understanding many simple questions, and the clips selected weren’t always the most appropriate responses. It didn’t look like this thing was a Jeopardy! champion. As the engineer was told, this is bleeding-edge technology; if you want to sell it to businesses, you need to make the case.… Read the restVirtual Fashion Shoot: Acculation Fashion Line (VR data #glamour)
This time, our data-driven decisions have led us to glamour, our own clothing line, and this VR virtual fashion shoot. Who says big data analytics have to be boring? First, some background on what got us here. Remember that, umm, ‘marketeer’ who suggested (in a comment on our IG feed) that we drop data science (one of the hottest fields at the moment) and instead sell his clothing? The comment was likely automated, but we had fun with it anyway. We told him we were too busy working on our perfume line. (“Data science: the new fragrance for men.”) But then we realized — technology exists to turn our IG feed (and the photo posts on this blog) into a fashion collection. So we wanted to do a fashion shoot. But models can be hard to work with. (They got agents, and, uggg, what a hassle. We live in LA, so we know.)… Read the restRecent Posts
