Applying AI to the California Water Crisis?
Singularity University recently closed its 2015 Impact Challenge Contest, asking for “exponential technologies” to solve the California water crisis. (Winners will be announced in a few days from this writing, October 26th.) We decided to share our thoughts on the “crisis”, and the many solutions that exist. This includes solutions that can apply “exponential technologies” like artificial intelligence and big data approaches to the problem. (We’ve previously discussed the concept of “exponential” technology growth in the context of the superintelligence. As most experts readily admit, exponential technological growth is not actually a new phenomenon.) In particular, there is one tried-and-proven 19th-century technology that today widely employs “exponential” technologies like artificial intelligence. For some reason, California is not (yet) applying this technology to the water “crisis” despite America’s widespread familiarity with it. We found over 16 water conservation technologies (some we just remembered from old textbooks) that have been successfully applied elsewhere in the world, but not in tech-savvy California.… Read the restSagan anti-extraterrestrial coffee mug redo
We realized our original glitch art Pioneer Plaque historic infographic would work much better as a commuter mug. So we decided to redo our original emergency anti-extraterrestrial abduction Earth locator mug as a commuter mug. (Both mugs are still our family-friendly cropped design.) For starters, the original plaque was gold metal and designed to last a billion years in space as M.E.T.I./S.E.T.I. This version probably won’t last as long, but you can still try communicating with aliens by hurtling it at them. Hopefully they won’t mistake it for dangerous space junk. This commuter mug will help keep your coffee warm on the long interstellar trip. (And trip is definitely the right word here.) Were you really expecting them to have your favorite brand of Arabica coffee on a UFO? Don’t think so. If they even know what coffee is, it’s probably that ersatz Robusta stuff coming out of a food synthesizer.… Read the restGlitched Carl Sagan NASA Pioneer Earth Locator Mug
Worried about being abducted by aliens while having your morning cup of Joe? Headed for Mars and worried about getting lost? This Earth Locator Mug is the coffee mug to get. This was inspired by one of our most-liked Instagram digital art works. It’s glitch art, Warhol-esque pop-art. It was created entirely via computer algorithms from our family-friendly version of the Carl Sagan and NASA co-designed Pioneer Plaque that went into space in the 1970s. The original image provides extraterrestrials with Earth’s location using the timings of many pulsars our blog. The original is a monochrome engraving. However, because this is glitch art, this is a much cooler-looking multicolor version. Something about the design said “coffee mug” to us.If you find yourself abducted by aliens, or lost in space, this mug can be used to locate Earth. (Just hold on to it after you’re abducted. Also, you’ll probably need to find some friendly aliens first who know about pulsar timings and can help.)… Read the restIconic Carl Sagan Nasa Pioneer plaque as glitch art
Ok, we took a pause from our variations on maps and charts to look back at some of the more iconic past images on our IG feed. One of our most iconic (and recognizable) is the Carl Sagan-designed plaque that went into space aboard Pioneer in the 1970s as a message to aliens. We had to crop the image to keep within IG community standards. (We also did a 3D-printed version of this.) So here is our first take on this: glitched Carl Sagan Pioneer Nasa plaque. If aliens would have a hard time deducing Earth’s location from the original Plaque due to the errors (see our original post and some of subsequent ones), this glitch art version would totally confuse them. If only we sent this version into space instead, Earth would now be safe from predatory aliens! 🙂 It’s also no longer #monochrome, due to the glitching skewing the colors.Ironically,… Read the restRecent Posts
