open semantic meaning platforms: alternatives to IBM Watson?
We’ve been a fan of IBM’s Watson semantic meaning analytics system since IBM first announced they were opening up their ecosystem. Around the time of CES we pointed out that the explosion of data from Internet of Things devices meant semantic processing made more sense than just writing more specialized apps. [Update June 2015: Check out our more recent post on Watson, which includes a selection of Ted Talks on Watson. This also talks about Watson’ use of distance matrices in statistical inference, and how this relates to our CEO’s own peer-reviewed academic research in that area. These internal metrics, whether automatically selected or manually defined, are likely to impact all similar systems. It would seem to be key technical factor in the cost and success of any new semantic data implementation.] There’s one small problem with developing IBM Watson cloud apps currently: access to the platform is currently still limited to a few partner companies, and IBM has not yet publicly announced pricing.… Read the restUsing analytics to validate startup ideas for products?
Today we look at using predictive analytics to validate startup ideas. This is part of our continuing Ask Acculation series; scroll down to find out how to get your analytics or start-up questions answered here. A version of this post was originally published elsewhere. “How do I validate my B2B idea? I have considered joining an accelerator, building a website prototype, or asking entrepreneur friends, but are there other ways? This is essentially one of the main goals of predictive analytics (what we do) when applied to business data: be able to evaluate your idea using fast, inexpensive tests, than transform that data to how the market might behave under “real” conditions. First off, the premise of the question is intriguing. We’ve seen social media memes that have gone viral “there is no B2B or B2C. There are only people” superimposed over some sort of feel-good graphic. And the memes have their staunch defends.… Read the restContract product managers for start-ups?
“Would you consider hiring a contract product manager? [Part of our continuing Ask Acculation series; we originally answered this question on a Q&A site. Scroll down to the bottom of this post to find out how you can get your start-up, analytics, or business management questions answered in a future version of this column.] We know of companies that hire contract Product Managers (PMs). Our CEO has interviewed a number of PMs over the years and otherwise been involved in PM hiring decisions as well as worked with closely with many PMs while leading engineering and scientific teams. First off, we might want to take a step back and explain to readers what a product manager does. They’re typical managers or senior executives within a product division of a company. Not every firm considers itself a “product company” and so not every company has a product division or product managers. For example, a company that considered itself primarily focused on sales or financial investments might not have many product managers.… Read the restCommon start-up hiring misconceptions
Startup hiring on a shoestring budget? Recently, we’ve gotten an awful lot of unsolicited requests for start-up advice, such as today’s question about startup hiring on a shoestring budget. (We’ve also received some solicited questions, as well. 🙂 ) We sometimes see the same mistakes being made over and over again by local entrepreneurs. We thought we’d cover some of these in our blog if it will help other start-ups out. If you have or are considering doing a start-up, scroll to the bottom of this article to see how you can get your questions answered in a future version of this column. Today, we’ll clear up some common misconceptions about the cost of engineers. This is an actual question we recently received via email from a local entrepreneur, one of many in our mail. We’ve removed the company name and altered some details for publication purposes. Start-up newbie: “I have an idea for a really awesome video-related mobile app!… Read the restRecent Posts
