Wolfram mathematica: data visualization example
This is example of visualization using Wolfram Mathematica, a commercial software package. We’ve previously discussed some of Wolfram’s other products and ideas in an earlier post on digital physics and cosmology as well as in our posts on IBM Watson. One of the reasons that data visualization remains something of a black art is that there are so many data visualization packages out there. Each package has its strength in a few kinds of plots or types of visualizations. Some of the better packages are commercial (and, unfortunately, not necessarily inexpensive). The high prices mean the experience of any practitioner is likely to be limited to a few commercial visualization packages over the course of a career (since most sites will only license a few packages). Open source data visualization packages are therefore very powerful, since they potentially combine the best of free tools. There are very good free tools out there.… Read the restgenetic disease turns you into a real-life vampire
Halloween photo 2: Could this real-life vampire, a genetic disease sufferer, see himself in the mirror? This is Transylvania born and bred (and Romania’s national hero and native son) Vlad III Tepes aka Vlad III Dracula (Wikipedia), real life noble and vampire. (His title translates from Romanian a bit higher than count, more like duke or prince.) Dracula (or Dracul, Dracule), is thought to have suffered from the genetic illness porphyria (Wikipedia), which symptoms match that of a vampire. A recessive disorder, it is much more likely to occur in inbred noble or royal families, and DNA testing has shown several prominent, historical nobles suffered from the genetic disease. No, porphyria suffers don’t turn into bats, become immortal, or sleep in coffins. And a genetic disease is hereditary, so a bite from a porphyria sufferer wouldn’t do much to you. (Rabies, the obvious disease basis for werewolf folklore, is another matter entirely.)… Read the restDigital data preservation: big data foils Taliban?
Digital data preservation: The photo pictures the larger Buddha of Bamiyan as it was (1968) and as it is today (2008 photo) after it was destroyed in 2001 by the Taliban, supposedly on the orders of Bin Laden himself (according to one documentary). Built 1,500 years ago in the 6th century AD, the Buddhas were a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the larger statue was 53m tall (174 feet), the largest #statue in the world. But thanks to big data (well, small data in 1968) it turns out the larger Buddha cannot be destroyed, for it has been digitally preserved forever. Long before the Taliban came to power, high-resolution photographs were taken from multiple camera positions. Half a century ago, way back in 1968, scientists already used the technique of photogrammetry to reconstruct a 3D contour plot by analyzing the data from the multiple photographs. With the computers of that day, a 3D model accurate to within 20 centimeters preserved the giant Buddha.… Read the restContract product managers for start-ups?
“Would you consider hiring a contract product manager? [Part of our continuing Ask Acculation series; we originally answered this question on a Q&A site. Scroll down to the bottom of this post to find out how you can get your start-up, analytics, or business management questions answered in a future version of this column.] We know of companies that hire contract Product Managers (PMs). Our CEO has interviewed a number of PMs over the years and otherwise been involved in PM hiring decisions as well as worked with closely with many PMs while leading engineering and scientific teams. First off, we might want to take a step back and explain to readers what a product manager does. They’re typical managers or senior executives within a product division of a company. Not every firm considers itself a “product company” and so not every company has a product division or product managers. For example, a company that considered itself primarily focused on sales or financial investments might not have many product managers.… Read the restRecent Posts
