Funny post about using fashion design as a device GUI
We posted this back on our Facebook page back in January in response to our then-very popular climate dress article. Although our posting is intended to be funny, there is a serious point: perhaps we have a lot to learn from fashion design on how to make better GUIs for our electronic devices and gadgets. We did actually contact the designer, Diffus DK, as mentioned in the Facebook post, quoted below. We had a nice discussion about some of the other products they are working on, including some home furnishing designs and interfaces. (We probably should have posted here instead of on Facebook. As due to the “new” algorithms Facebook has been gradually rolling over the last few months, this blog gets much more readership than posting to Facebook page will. This has infuriated some marketers, who spent a great deal of money buying supposedly highly-targeted, highly-engaged Facebook likes from Facebook at cost typically of maybe $1-$2 or more.… Read the restWatson from IBM: Why semantic text tech helps analytics
IBM Watson: dramatic potential or nothing new? There is a new type of software technology from IBM and others that has the potential to dramatically change how we work. In particular, certain types of workplace drudgery may be eliminated. The key is intelligent processing of unstructured text. You might remember IBM’s Watson technology from a few year’s back. It’s a natural language Q&A system named after IBM’s founder (pictured). (We’re guessing it’s also an allusion to the Sherlock Holmes character.) As a publicity stunt, IBM had Watson beat the reigning Jeopardy! champion. At least based on the material on IBM’s website it still isn’t too clearly technically what IBM is. There are other impressive systems for searching and processing unstructured text and answering human-language questions. (We’ll talk about them in a bit.) Aside from some glossy marketing materials, IBM seems coy about why Watson is better or cheaper than the competition.… Read the restCreative Solutions to Air Quality
A positive blog One of our vendors (not one of our readers, apparently) complained recently that air quality and air pollution were less than upbeat topics. That’s the traditional ostrich mind set. “Oh air quality, nothing can be done.” We beg to differ. We’ve done many blog articles about how you can use our free app and simple technologies to control your indoor air quality and fight air pollution. But the news has filled recently with stories about how new technologies finding solutions to air pollution. For example, China is considering experimenting with new technologies to spray water from skyscrapers to bring PM 2.5 air pollution levels down to a somewhat safer 35 micograms per m3. (PM 2.5 levels were recently above that level here in Los Angeles on multiple days so maybe we should be spraying water from our downtown skyscrappers out here as well if it would help. Los Angeles is a large geographic area, however, and one wonders how effective spraying in downtown would be.)… Read the restDust sensors, the latest CES vacuum cleaners, and the Internet of Things
The Internet of Things comes to vacuum cleaners at CES The Internet of Things was big at CES this year so we went looking for appliance manufacturers that had incorporated a dust sensor (and Internet connection!) into their appliances. We’re apparently a little ahead bit of the pack on this, as most exhibitors in this space weren’t quite thinking along these lines yet. (There were “smart vent hoods” that might, or might not, incorporate a dust sensor. These allow restaurants to save energy, and we might do a future post on them [updated: link].) One company that was thinking along these lines was Moneual, that makes a robotic vacuum competitor to the iRobot Roomba that we review below. The exhibit heavily touted that the Moneual was “a hybrid” dry and mop robotic vacuum. This is a brilliant marketing move, and it makes sense that the same robot vacuum should be able to also mop.… Read the restRecent Posts
