Watson from IBM: Why semantic text tech helps analytics
IBM Watson: dramatic potential or nothing new? There is a new type of software technology from IBM and others that has the potential to dramatically change how we work. In particular, certain types of workplace drudgery may be eliminated. The key is intelligent processing of unstructured text. You might remember IBM’s Watson technology from a few year’s back. It’s a natural language Q&A system named after IBM’s founder (pictured). (We’re guessing it’s also an allusion to the Sherlock Holmes character.) As a publicity stunt, IBM had Watson beat the reigning Jeopardy! champion. At least based on the material on IBM’s website it still isn’t too clearly technically what IBM is. There are other impressive systems for searching and processing unstructured text and answering human-language questions. (We’ll talk about them in a bit.) Aside from some glossy marketing materials, IBM seems coy about why Watson is better or cheaper than the competition.… Read the restCheap air filters for the broke?
Cheap air filters when you can’t afford to make a fashion statement? Air pollution is serious enough to create elevated cancer, trigger allergies and asthma is of concern in nearly every major city in the world. However, according to NASA, the worst PM2.5 pollution is in Chinese and Indian cities, places where it may be difficult for the average citizen to afford a traditional, consumer-grade air purifier. As most people don’t want to wear a mask all day long and look like a medieval plague doctor, the hunt is on for other cheap technologies, such as dirt cheap air filters and purifiers. [UPDATE: Thomas Talhelm of Smart Air Filters emailed us some comments/corrections on the article. We’ve included these in the comments below.] One Chinese/American startup, based in Beijing and the US [Update: they are mainly in Beijing], may have a solution. Smart Air Filters has come up with inexpensive kits consisting of little more than a fan, some duct tape [Update: it’s a velcro strap], and a HEPA filter.… Read the restThe ancient link between fashion and technology
This article was original published by Acculation on another site. Is there a utilitarian purpose to fashion? Fashion is economically very important in the media and advertising industries for reasons not well understood, at least to the average tech engineer. In the smartphone and wearables area, the two fields are increasingly colliding. Is there an ancient link between technology and fashion? Humans love technology, but we were also very dependent on it very early on. Was fashion initially a way of identifying humans visually over long distances? Was it, in the sense, an early form of technology? Tech and Fashion: Ancient History? Our ancestors have been using tools for well over a million years. For most of that time, however, they had brains about half the size that we do currently. Anatomically modern humans that resembled us physically (and had our size brains) first appeared around 100,000 to 200,000 years ago.… Read the restBiofeedback, Wearables, and Fitness Video Games
This article was originally published by Acculation on another site. As we’ve discussed earlier, one of the reason “sensor laden devices” like smartphones, smartwatches, and the emerging Internet of Things category are so amazing is that all of their uses haven’t yet been invented. There are so many sensors jam-packed into these devices, that software developers are constantly figuring out how to come with novel ways to use these sensors together in newly invented ways. It’s a combination of a large number of sensors jammed into a small space, combined with powerful computers and innovative software that is bringing us into the future. Fitness video games are just one aspect of this wearables revolution. Treating Stress and Pulmonary Disease with Heart Rate Variability Feedback: StressEraser and … Nintendo? Around 2008 one of our team members bought a product called the StressEraser. (It was quite expensive then; it has since fallen to around $130.)… Read the restRecent Posts
