We’re doing a forthcoming piece on careers in data science! (Forbes article on why this is one of the hottest career paths currently.) If you have questions, now’s time to ask!
Do you really need a PhD or masters in a hard science to get into data science? Do you need statistics training, applied math, engineering, and/or CS? What about and parallelism that aren’t taught that much at university? How about an or degree instead? How about an MBA?
Do you really need Python, R ,or Sql? (And what are those?)
Some of us have interviewed hundreds of prospective data scientists, engineers, project managers, and executives in data science-related areas! We’ve built our own teams of data scientists and data engineers. Our CEO (unofficial external Wikipedia bio) has given career talks and been quoted in the leading career-blogs like the Yahoo! Monster Jobs and many others. We have all sorts of stories (anonymous of course!) about some of candidates that made it, and some of the ones that didn’t! Here is a slideshow from one recent talk.
Ask us anything! (About data science careers)
About the photo: a WWII aircraft factory in New York State. At the time, this was a beehive of industry and careers. (Operations research, a component of data science, was invented during WWII to help manage these kinds of activities, among other things.)
