Glitched Hoag’s Object Ring Galaxy
Here’s a glitch art encore layout collage collage of our earlier Hoag’s object ring galaxy post. This has several glitched popart versions. Hoag’s object is a non-typical ring galaxy. Our original IG post (and a longer version on our blog) talked about Kardashev’s ideas on what a type III civilization might look like, and how it might use galaxies for energy. To which we added the newly appreciated relationship between information and energy (or rather energy gradients and entropy), ideas that have become more popular with theories such as the holographic universe, and causal fermion system. Solar eruption and “Black Swan” event photo overload: this is an encore layout collage of our earlier glitch variations (and original) giant sun prominent post on IG. This giant prominence erupted from the sun on Aug 31, 2012, sending a shockwave towards Earth that could have caused some very serious problems. You can read more about the Sun in our earlier posts on theories of harnessing energy from the sun apply to civilizations (including human civilizations) as well as how giant solar shockwaves pose a threat to Earth (1859 Carrington event – Wikipedia). Our earlier blog post also talked about how the Chinese have nearly 3,000 years of recorded solar observations, which comes in handy. We’re having fun showing our most popular blog and photo posts can now be turned in real, shop-ready products thanks to the maker movement. As an example of data-driven social media, we repurposed a popular image from our social media feed into a 3D printed jewelry item available that is ready-for-purchase in 18K gold and other materials. (Separately, we also converted this blog photo into an in-game virtual reality object, permitting a virtual reality fashion shoot.) This caveman design keychain was co-designed and generated in part by an 11,000-year old caveman illustration of a woolly-mammoth in France. (You can read our original blog article with illustration here. Also, check out a cool data-driven social media video we created featuring some of these items, as well as more serious pop-scientific article on potentially de-extincting the woolly mammoth for interstellar space travel someday.) You can use the Shapeways widget below to manipulate the 3D object and see it from a variety of viewpoints (as well as buy the physical object in a wide-variety of materials, from the extremely inexpensive to the very expensive): So we can say that this keychain was truly co-designed by a French Cro-magnon caveman living 11,000 years ago.… Read the restWolfram Alpha, von Neumann & digital physics
Continuing our discussion of fractals, digital physics, self-replicating spacecraft, cellular automatons, and von Neumann machines, this is view of a different part of the Mandelbrot Set (produced with a different viewer). Answer to the question at the end of yesterday’s IG photo post involves Stephen Wolfram of Mathematica fame. His company, Wolfram Research, makes the Wolfram Cloud Programming Language, a potential competitor to something IBM Watson-like, which we discussed in an earlier blog post. This language powers Wolfram Alpha, which is currently part of Apple Siri. So, if you’ve used Siri you’ve probably used this software. When not developing technology that became part of Siri, Stephen Wolfram wrote a bestselling (and somewhat controversial) book on Cellular Automatons, A New Type of Science. In one information-centric view of the universe attributed to Wheeler and others (sometimes called “digital physics”) the universe can be thought of as a collection of cellular automatons (or, equivalently, a Turing machine or perhaps a quantum computer).… Read the restRecent Posts
