Open societies, world literacy and censorship, Take 2
A couple things here. A while back we did several posts about the social progress index (with the original, unglitched Dutch masterpiece version of this 1600s schoolhouse painting to symbolize world literacy). We talked about how big data (or at least econometric) models predict how closed societies negatively impact our world, and some speculation about real world events. Since we wrote our original article, one of the Social Progress Index folks did a Ted talk. On an unrelated noted, we also we wanted to do an encore repost of our Dutch schoolhouse painting. This was partially to remind our Instagram followers about the demonstrated importance of open societies: a combination (and balance) of factors such as high literacy (education), low corruption, security, and low inequality. Ironically, Instagram decided to censor our original post comment (with this image but with a caption about glitch art and the Social Progress Index.) The image was allowed but the comment automatically deleted by Instagram’s censorship software.… Read the restGlitched Carl Sagan NASA Pioneer Earth Locator Mug
Worried about being abducted by aliens while having your morning cup of Joe? Headed for Mars and worried about getting lost? This Earth Locator Mug is the coffee mug to get. This was inspired by one of our most-liked Instagram digital art works. It’s glitch art, Warhol-esque pop-art. It was created entirely via computer algorithms from our family-friendly version of the Carl Sagan and NASA co-designed Pioneer Plaque that went into space in the 1970s. The original image provides extraterrestrials with Earth’s location using the timings of many pulsars our blog. The original is a monochrome engraving. However, because this is glitch art, this is a much cooler-looking multicolor version. Something about the design said “coffee mug” to us.If you find yourself abducted by aliens, or lost in space, this mug can be used to locate Earth. (Just hold on to it after you’re abducted. Also, you’ll probably need to find some friendly aliens first who know about pulsar timings and can help.)… Read the restGlitched Hoag’s Object Ring Galaxy
Here’s a glitch art encore layout collage collage of our earlier Hoag’s object ring galaxy post. This has several glitched popart versions. Hoag’s object is a non-typical ring galaxy. Our original IG post (and a longer version on our blog) talked about Kardashev’s ideas on what a type III civilization might look like, and how it might use galaxies for energy. To which we added the newly appreciated relationship between information and energy (or rather energy gradients and entropy), ideas that have become more popular with theories such as the holographic universe, and causal fermion system. Solar eruption and “Black Swan” event photo overload: this is an encore layout collage of our earlier glitch variations (and original) giant sun prominent post on IG. This giant prominence erupted from the sun on Aug 31, 2012, sending a shockwave towards Earth that could have caused some very serious problems. You can read more about the Sun in our earlier posts on theories of harnessing energy from the sun apply to civilizations (including human civilizations) as well as how giant solar shockwaves pose a threat to Earth (1859 Carrington event – Wikipedia). Our earlier blog post also talked about how the Chinese have nearly 3,000 years of recorded solar observations, which comes in handy.
